Every island in the Canaries has a Parador, the brilliantly conceived national chain set up to restore old castles and buildings of national value in Spain converting them into prestigious hotels. The site of Gomera’s Parador, which has a four star rating, was the mansion of the first Spanish governors of the island in the 16th century. Although the present building is not the original it is modelled on its predecessor and has an air of peaceful elegance in its courtyards, rooms and communal areas, the most noise emanating from the parrot in the garden saying “Hola” to those that pass by. From here there are wonderful views across the sea to Mount Teide and Tenerife and down to San Sebastian’s marina, beach and ferry port.
The rooms are spacious, beautifully proportioned and furnished to a high standard in Castillian style. The hotel has 60 rooms, mostly twin-bedded, some with double beds and two suites, most of which have balconies or terraces opening onto the extensive gardens and courtyards. They are equipped with satellite TV, minibar and telephone. Bathrooms are spacious and have a full sized bath, bidet and hairdryer. The air-conditioned restaurant (see photo below) is the smartest on the island with food to match - breakfast being a special treat. There is also a bar at the poolside which serves lunchtime tapas.
The pool area is in a secluded position through the hotel gardens and right on the edge of the cliff. It never seems crowded or noisy and the pool itself is big enough to get some real exercise.
The centre of town and beaches are 15 minutes walk down hill with shops, restaurants as well as various monuments and landmarks relating to Christopher Columbus who was a regular visitor here taking on supplies during his epic voyages to the new world. A car is recommended here although not essential.
There are special discounts for over 60s and under 30s. Contact CasasCanarias for more details.
